As I move with the camera alongside the performers, we intimately become the performance itself. In my work, what the audience witnesses is not just a documentation of a performance, for I also plan to capture the very essence of emotion and tension.


“The Light is Coming” is inspired by contemporary American philosopher Lee Edelman’s queer critique of "reproductive futurism," a central concept from his seminal book No Future. "Reproductive Futurism" critiques how heteronormative societies construct a political ideology around the "Child" (written with a capital "C" to differentiate the symbol from real, living children). This pervasive ideology forces society to place all intrinsic value on a romanticized future—predicated on biological reproduction—often at the expense of the diverse realities of the present.

Intertwined with this theoretical critique is Fan-Yu’s deeply personal journey as a trans woman navigating the expectations of a conservative upbringing. Influenced heavily by the traditional values of her mother and father, she constantly finds herself caught in an internal fracture: a deeply rooted desire to inherit her parents' lifestyle and achieve the archetypal "happy family," contrasted against the heavy reality of her biological inability to bear children.
